Located at the very center of Russia Khanty-Mansiysk occupies the central portion of West Siberia Plain. It is bordered by Yamalo-Nenets autonomous okrug to the north, Komi Republic to the northeast, Sverdlovsk Region to the southwest, Tyumen Region to the south, Tomsk Region and Krasnoyarsk Krai to the east. The area covers 80 latitude, from 58o N to 66o N. Time zone: GMT offset is +0500/+0600 (summer/winter); CET +0400/+0500; Moscow + 0200. The principal rivers in the Okrug are the Ob and Irtysh, along with other Ob tributaries - Vakh, Agan, Tromyegan, Bolshoy Yugan, Lyamin, Pim, Bolshoy Salym, Nazym, Severnaya Sosva, Kazym. The Okrug is home to 30,000 rivers and 290,000 lakes of 1 ha or larger. The area has several distinct vegetation regions, including boreal forests, swamps, ponds, wetlands and mountain tundra. Forests cover 52,1% of the territory of the Okrug. The largest area is middle taiga, its native plants include Siberian spruce, pine, larch, and fir. River valleys and lowlands are dominated by typical grassland species. Mosses and lichens grow in the treeless northern part and are a major source of food for reindeer. Forests and swamps support rich vegetation, including cranberries, cowberries, blueberries, currants and blackberries, as well as cloudberries, dog rose hips, bird cherry, rowan berries. Such animals as red fox, polar fox, squirrel, marten, sable, stoat, mink, rabbit, mole, wild reindeer, and elk are common in Khanty-Mansiysk autonomous okrug. Birds are also plentiful in the Okrug, with large populations of grouse, brent geese, black grouse, hazel grouse, and various species of ducks and geese. Rivers and ponds are full of a variety of fish. There are 42 species including food fish species, such as sturgeon, starlet, white salmon, muksun (whitefish), peled, and herring. Yugra is a land of flat, fertile plains and low hills. Major landforms are broad plain with low hills with elevations from 150-301 m., low areas (100-150 m.) and lowlands (less than 100 meters above sea level). Water-meadows beside the Ob and Irtysh rivers are below 50 metres. Uplands and mountains are common for the Urals part of the Okrug. The strip of mountain range is 450 meters long and only 30-45 meters wide. The highest points are Mount Narodnaya, 1,894 m (Pre-polar Urals) and Pedy Mountain, 1,010 m (Northern Urals). Khanty-Mansiysk autonomous okrug lies within the Taiga ecozone, characterized by needleleaf forests, interspersed with immense wetlands. Large regions of the plains are flooded in the spring and summer. Most of the lakes and rivers freeze for much of the year. The Okrug has a cold continental climate characterized by long severe winters, short and relatively warm summers, and wide annual temperature ranges. Light morning and night frost and much wider daily temperature ranges occur throughout the spring and autumn months. The median temperature in January is 18 to 24oC. Winter with mean temperatures below freezing lasts for up to seven months, October to April. Snow covers the region for about 6 months of the year. The warmest time in the area is July, the average daily high in July is 15,7 to 18,4oC. Strong northerly winds blow most frequently in summer, winter is the complete opposite with winds from the south direction prevailing. Khanty-Mansiysk autonomous okrug averages 400 to 550 mm of precipitation per year with about 800 mm of snow. 15% of annual rainfall falls in July as rain.
The atmospheric pressure is low relative to the Asian anticyclone pressure. Southwesterly winds from the Atlantic bring warm air and snow to the region. The average air pressure in July is about 754-756 mm (29,76 inch) of mercury, lower then in Arctic region, but higher then in Central Asia.
